Houdini Revisited

March 4, 2011

This is part of  the Masculinity Project larger body of work that includes the Burden piece described below, for example, and the first names of guys on floral fabric.  I’m interested in Houdini because his work was based on a physical and “magical” masculine ideal and his publicity shots, which I recreated, reflect that.  The gap between the shots a hundred or more years ago and my average-person matter-of-fact restaging is what interests me because I’m curious about the loss of masculinity in that gap.  So examples are below; more handcuff shots coming next week.
