Not Painting

September 3, 2011

So I have been toying around more with colored grids after looking at and reading some Albers and also taking a look at the other hard-edge folks from the ’60/’70s, especially Frank Stella.  Not that I imagine this as painting though; instead what I’m interested in is the authority of color theory and the rigidity of hard-edge abstraction coupled with the chance operation of the camera or flatbed scanner.  Two more examples from today are below and take them not as finished projects but as studies along the way to landing on something that brings together what I want to do and justifies it as (post)photography vs. just buying a canvas and some paint and having at it already.
